Colombia is working on initiatives for the development of green and blue hydrogen considering the abundance of sun, wind, coal and water. Hydrogen is listed as the fuel of the future by the International Energy Agency, says the Ministry of Mines and Energy.
The level of expectation that has aroused the production and use of hydrogen grows as the challenges become greater before this energy can offer a truly cost-effective way to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, argues a investigation of the firm Boston Consulting Group.
In Colombia “hydrogen will complement Colombia’s Energy Transition because it takes advantage of renewable energy resources, coming from the sun and wind, to generate this energy through electrolysis and thus produce electricity on days without wind or in periods without sunlight, allowing progress towards a more modern, efficient, reliable and sustainable energy sector ”, says the Minister of Mines and Energy, Diego Mesa.

It has been decades since hydrogen was first proposed as a primary source of clean energy. The studies open the possibility that this clean fuel can begin to contribute to the fight against climate change.
“Our scenario analysis shows that at two dollars per kilogram of hydrogen, several applications are likely to be economically competitive in Europe in 2030. In the case of heavy transport, the unit economy will be favorable at a relatively early stage, fuel cells Fuel and hydrogen-based fuels have operational advantages compared to electric battery options due to their higher power density and faster refueling times, ”explained Álvaro Martínez, director & partner of Boston Consulting Group (BCG).
The firm hopes that hydrogen will be used in direct combustion to produce energy and heat, in the long term. He estimates potential revenue for machine builders of $ 80-90 billion annually by 2050. However, “hydrogen is not yet as profitable as current applications and must compete with other low-carbon technologies for some applications. ”Says BCG.
Within the new technologies, Colombia is working on initiatives for the development of green and blue hydrogen, considering the abundance of sun, wind, coal and water as key resources for the production of this energy, cataloged as the fuel of the future by the International Agency of Energy, says the Ministry of Mines and Energy.

The BCG firm points out that taking advantage of the full potential of hydrogen carries significant challenges and risks. But he sees technological hurdles and that the market is highly fragmented, with no clear winner likely to emerge for some time. Advances are also highly dependent on government grants and supporting policies and regulations.
