The religious organization Christian Aid Ministries has denounced that a group of 17 missionaries, including five minors, has been kidnapped this Saturday in Haiti.

" The group of sixteen US citizens and one Canadian citizen includes five men, seven women and five children," the organization reported in a statement, adding that the missionaries were in Haitian territory visiting an orphanage .

In addition, they have pointed out that the relevant authorities are "looking for ways to help", while the US network CNN, based on sources from the Haitian Security Forces, has attributed the kidnapping to local gang members.

For its part, the United States Department of State has issued a statement in which it assures that "the well-being and safety of American citizens abroad is one of the highest priorities of the State Department, " and has confirmed that it is "Aware of the reports," according to the US press.

Finally, the religious congregation has asked to pray for "the hostages, the kidnappers and the families, friends and churches of those affected" and for those who " seek God's direction and make decisions regarding this matter ."
