Hey Banco bets on the recycling and design of its plastics

In order to create community and modern designs on its cards, Hey Banco (the technology business that depends on Banregio) is betting on limited editions and plastic recycling.

“The consumption of plastic in cards is very little, but it is plastic consumption anyway and we are seeing the migration of production with recycled plastic and we are launching a campaign for you to recycle your plastic (from bank cards),” Mauricio said in an interview. Ballesteros, director of Personal Banking at Hey Banco.

The idea is that in more than 10,000 Hey points, card shredders are installed and users bring their expired plastic for recycling. People can even trade in a card that isn’t expired for a design they like better.

The shredder will ensure that people’s data is not misused. “Those already crushed plastics we are going to make from ecological bricks to artistic pieces,” said Ballesteros.

They go for contests

The institution is opening contests for creative people to design Hey Banco credit and debit cards. In the last edition, Emmanuel Corona was the winner.

After the scrutiny of more than 4,000 designs, the winner was a young man with a passion for animation and illustration, who told Expansión that he had done a market study, researched Hey Banco and the tastes of Mexicans to be inspired, such as the axolotl or the monarch butterfly.

“It was an analysis of metrics of what elements were memorable and that make up Mexican culture. The element of Quetzalcóatl is very important and monuments in Mexico City are the most relevant for users,” he told Expansión. “Regardless of whether it is very cool, it has to be functional and must go with the brand.”

The production cost of each card is between 30 and 40 pesos and the intention is to launch frequent contests for users to vote, the design that gathers more than 5,000 votes can be entitled to have a card printed with its design and in exchange, royalties will be given.

Hey Banco is an institution that is processing its fintech license. In the meantime, it operates under Banregio’s banking license and serves individuals and businesses.
