"Highly alarmed": First federal state facing the highest corona warning level – and Berlin also wants to expand 2G

The fourth wave of the corona pandemic is rolling, the numbers continue to rise. Virologist Brinkmann warns against too large vaccination gaps in Germany and the first country draws consequences. The news ticker.

  • The Corona * incidence was just below the record level on Sunday. (see first report)
  • Due to increasing numbers, the highest warning level is expected to be issued in Baden-Württemberg shortly (see update from November 7th, 3:45 p.m.).
  • Berlin now also apparently wants to expand the 2G rule (see update from November 7th, 7:58 p.m.).
  • This news ticker is updated regularly.

Update from November 7th, 7:58 p.m.: Berlin now also wants to tighten its corona measures. The Senate plans to extend the 2G rule to other places and events. “2G is being prepared,” said Health Senator Dilek Kalayci (SPD) on Sunday the Tagesspiegel . The members of the Senate will therefore exchange information in several channels, and a special session is also possible. A regular Senate meeting is not planned again until a week later because of the November 9th memorial day.

Currently in Berlin, operators of restaurants or event organizers, for example, can decide for themselves whether they allow access to their interiors for vaccinated, convalescent and tested people (3G) or only for vaccinated and convalescent people (2G). In the case of 2G, there is no mask requirement. A spokesman for Kalaycis left open on Sunday which new regulations are under discussion.

“Highly alarmed”: First federal state before the highest corona warning level

Update from November 7th, 3:45 p.m.: In view of the increasingly worsening corona situation in Baden-Württemberg, the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health is expecting the so-called alert level to be declared shortly. This would result in drastic restrictions for many unvaccinated people in the state. With a view to current forecasts and model calculations of the University of Freiburg, it is assumed that the alarm level could possibly be called by the end of the week, “in any case” but in mid-November, said a spokeswoman for the ministry on Sunday in Stuttgart at the request of the dpa .

Corona in Germany: Baden-Württemberg before the alert level was declared

State Health Minister Manne Lucha (Greens) said that the fourth wave was also rolling “with full force” in Baden-Württemberg, the intensive care units in the hospitals were filling up rapidly – “primarily with unvaccinated patients, but also more and more people over 60 Years with breakthrough vaccinations come to the hospital ”. One is “highly alarmed”.

The Corona Ordinance provides for the 2G rule nationwide in the event of an alert, for example in restaurants, museums, exhibitions and most other public events. Many unvaccinated people would then no longer have the opportunity to participate in public life in many areas – because proof of current PCR or antigen tests is then no longer sufficient in many cases. That would also be the case in many areas at Christmas markets, for example. Exceptions to the tough measures would apply to children and pregnant women as well as people who cannot be vaccinated for medical reasons.

Corona in Germany: German Medical Association calls for the return of the free rapid tests

Update from November 7th, 12:05 p.m.: The German Medical Association has demanded a quick reintroduction of the free corona rapid tests. “The expiry of the assumption of costs for corona citizen tests apparently did not motivate those unwilling to vaccinate to be vaccinated,” said medical president Klaus Reinhardt to the newspapers of the Funke media group . The federal and state governments should have the courage to correct this wrong decision quickly and consistently.

Especially in the cold season with many indoor leisure activities, low-threshold, free test offers are needed again to slow the spread of the virus. “The new regulation must now come quickly, if possible with the amendment of the Infection Protection Act in mid-November,” demanded Reinhardt.

Since October 11, corona rapid tests have only been free in Germany in exceptional cases. The federal government has stopped funding, and many test stations are now closed. The reason for the decision was that everyone now has the opportunity to protect themselves with a vaccination. Since then, free rapid tests have only been available for people who cannot be vaccinated, including children under the age of 12, as well as temporarily for 12 to 17 year olds and pregnant women.

Corona numbers are increasing in Germany: incidence just below record

First report from November 7th: Berlin – The corona numbers continue to rise. Last Friday (November 5), with 37,120 new infections, a record since the beginning of the pandemic * was reached. On Sunday morning (November 7th) the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported 23,543 new corona cases – that is 6656 new infections more than a week ago.

The nationwide seven-day incidence * has also increased significantly. The RKI gave the value on Sunday morning as 191.5. The previous day the incidence was 183.7, a week ago it was 149.4 (previous month: 62.6). This is getting closer and closer to the pandemic’s peak. During the second wave, the nationwide incidence on December 22, 2020 was 197.6.

The number of corona patients * admitted to clinics per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days – the most important parameter for a possible tightening of the corona restrictions – was last given by the RKI on Friday at 3.91 (Thursday: 3.73). With the indicator, however, it must be taken into account that hospital admissions are sometimes reported with delay. A nationwide threshold value from when the situation can be viewed critically is not provided for the incidence of hospitalization, among other things because of large regional differences. The previous high was around 15.5 around Christmas time.

Virologist Brinkmann: “Vaccine picking so big that it can lead to dramatic numbers”

Even if the numbers are as high as a year ago, the situation cannot be compared one to one. Virologist Melanie Brinkmann also explained this. “Because we have a vaccine. The majority of the population is vaccinated, ”she explained .

“Nevertheless, the vaccination gaps are still so large that there can actually be dramatic numbers when it comes to the occupancy of the intensive care beds in the hospitals,” warned Brinkmann. “The people in the intensive care unit are mostly people who are not vaccinated,” said the virologist. That is good news. “We have the means in hand to protect ourselves and to keep the number of sick and dead low,” said Brinkmann.

57.9 million people in Germany – i.e. 69.7 percent of the total population – have been vaccinated against the coronavirus * at least once. This is based on figures from the RKI on Saturday (November 6th). 55.8 million (67.1 percent) are fully vaccinated. In addition, 2.7 million people received a so-called booster vaccination *.
