How to use social networks in emergency situations

Today an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.7 was recorded in Mexico City, with an epicenter in Michoacán, according to the National Seismological. Automatically, social networks were flooded with publications, videos, photos and information were shared.

Due to its immediacy, social networks are a tool that, used correctly, can improve the effectiveness of emergency interventions. Here are some tips for publishing and consuming news on social networks in the most responsible way:

Twitter

As a conversation platform, this is the favorite network to search for and share information in emergency situations. If you are going to share information, do the following:

  1. Optimize your profile : Use keywords and hashtags or tags in your bio and account name, so that you are easily found. For example, if you are a media outlet, an NGO, a government agency, saying it clearly or mentioning which institution you belong to will make people find you more quickly.
  2. Pin a Tweet : Keep an important tweet, with the latest situation information, pinned to the top of your Profile. Make sure to update it. For example, if you have access to a list with true information such as names of people or provisions to donate in a shelter, you can pin the tweet with this information so that it is the first thing that others see when they enter your profile.
  3. Prepare a list of key accounts to follow during emergencies: This will help share critical information as well as monitor the conversation when you pin it to the home page on your phone.
  4. Use Twitter Threads: If you’re reporting updates on a specific place or situation, threads help add context when you need more characters. They are also useful during ongoing conversations. They don’t just have to be text, you can make a thread of audio tweets from the start.
  5. Use Twitter Spaces: If you want to share a live situation, discussion or connect with people in real time, Spaces is a very effective and useful format. Here you can have live audio conversations on Twitter and being public, anyone can join as a listener; this includes those who do not follow you. In addition, it is the format on Twitter with the greatest visibility, since when it is live, it appears at the top of the Chronology of all your followers.

On the other hand, if you are going to consume information, we recommend the following:

  1. Check your timeline to make sure you know the latest information: By tapping the ✨ icon in the top right corner, you can choose to view “Featured Tweets” or “Latest Tweets” to get posts in reverse chronological order.
  2. Turn on notifications from relevant accounts: This will send you a push notification every time they post a Tweet or have other activity like a Space. Remember that you can turn off notifications at any time you want.
  3. Use Twitter Communities: Want to organize to support by rescuing pets, donating food, clothing or another way? They can do it directly in the Twitter Communities. These were created to give people a unique place to connect, share and get closer to the discussions that matter most to them. Tweets from the Communities can be seen by anyone, but only those who belong to the Community can participate in the discussion.

Instagram and Facebook

Instagram stories and Facebook posts are another format that is widely used in emergency or disaster situations. If you are going to publish either of these two formats, be sure to indicate:

  1. Location
  2. Schedule
  3. Need

Updating the information is very important. If help has already arrived or if another need arises, let us know.

If you are going to repost information, make sure it comes from official, verified sources or from people who provide sufficient and up-to-date information to know that it is not fake news.
