The floods mainly affect the Indonesian main island of Java. They brought a lot of suffering, several people died and others were missed.
Jakarta – Flash floods in Indonesia killed at least five people after heavy rains. Four more are still missing after the masses of water and debris streamed into the town of Batu on the main island of Java on Thursday, the civil protection agency announced on Friday.
“Rescue teams are still looking for the missing and helping to clear away the rubble,” said agency spokesman Abdul Muhari. Surrounded by mountains, Batu is popular with Indonesians as a travel destination because of its cool climate.
Floods also occurred in Bone Bolango on the island of Sulawesi. Almost 300 houses were flooded, Muhari said. There were no reports of deaths there. Heavy downpours and landslides are not uncommon in the Southeast Asian island nation during the rainy season, which lasts from November to March. dpa
