The fundamental pillars of physics and Albert Einstein’s theory of relativity falter after the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) discovered that hthere is something that moves faster than light: neutrinos.
This is deduced from the results of an experiment according to whichneutrinos would travel at a speed 20 parts per million above the speed of light, considered until now as the limit of cosmic speed. The result was based specifically on the observation of 15,000 neutrinos. “Given the potential consequences of such a result, independent measurements are required before refuting it or establishing it firmly,” the institution said in a statement. “The results have been a real surprise,” adds the spokesman for the OPERA experiment, Antonio Ereditato, from the University of Bern. “But after several months of studies and crossing information, we have not found any instrumental effect that could explain the result of the measure,” he added. Hence, now from CERN they ask thatindependent measurements are taken to confirm the results.
“The feeling that most people have is that this cannot be correct, that it cannot be real,” explains James Gilles, spokesman for CERN. CERN has recalled thatthe possibility that the neutrino is faster than light “does not agree with the laws of nature” that are currently considered to be true, but, at the same time, he recognized that this is how science advances, “overturning the established paradigms.”
