Knife attack in Vienna: police report four injured

In Vienna-Brigittenau, a man injured several people with a knife on Tuesday afternoon. The Austrian was arrested and the police are investigating.

Vienna – Four people were injured in a knife attack in Austria’s capital Vienna on Tuesday. A 35-year-old had entered a snack bar in the Brigittenau district of Vienna around 2 p.m. and grabbed a knife. According to ORF, the guests present immediately fled outdoors. The perpetrator also left the snack bar and stabbed passers-by at random.

In doing so, he inflicts superficial cuts, light stab wounds and tear wounds on the victims of the attack. The police said that none of the victims were in mortal danger. All four were admitted to the surrounding hospitals and treated.

The 35-year-old perpetrator was kept in check by others present until the emergency services arrived. According to the police, he let himself be taken into custody without resistance. When he was arrested, however, he gave confused information, giving the impression of psychological impairment.

“A political or religious motive is considered unlikely after initial investigations,” said a police spokesman. According to ORF, the perpetrator was already known to the police beforehand. The exact background of the crime is now being determined.

Nevertheless, this attack probably reminds some Austrians of the events of the terrorist attack last year. In exactly one week, on November 2nd, this attack will be celebrated for the first time.
