March 14, the day of the number Pi

Thousands of people celebrate today the day of the number P i. Although the date coincides with Albert Einstein's birthday, the reason for choosing March 14 for the celebration is found in his Anglo-Saxon writing: 3/14, which is the value of this famous mathematical constant.

Throughout the day the followers of the number Pi will gather to comment on anecdotes about this number and exchange postcards and commemorative cakes. Computer applications have been developed that accurately calculate a person's age in Pi years, and other people get together to recite all the digits they know by heart. In addition, since the first six digits of the constant are 3.14159, the peak of the celebration occurs at 1:59 a.m.

The United States House of Representatives approved in 2009 the celebration of Pi Day and urged that schools and institutes carry out activities and encourage their students to study mathematics.

Another important day on the calendar for lovers of mathematics and the number Pi is July 22 of each year. The fraction 22/7 results in 3.142857 … a number very close to the real value of pi. That is why every July 22 is celebrated the " Day of Approach to Pi ".
