Hamburg – What kind of talk show times were those days! For example with “3nach9” (own spelling), the meanwhile oldest running TV talk series, which is produced on behalf of Radio Bremen TV and also broadcast by NDR, HR and rbb television. People were allowed to smoke until the participants in the discussion were enveloped in thick clouds of fog. Alcohol was drunk, laughed and argued. And there were still tangible “media scandals” that really deserved this term.
During the broadcast on February 19, 1982, Fritz Teufel, the former leading member of the left-wing extremist terrorist organization “Movement June 2nd”, pulled a water pistol in the middle of the discussion about good behavior and splashed Hans Matthöfer (SPD), the then Federal Minister of Finance, with him Magic ink wet. At first, like all the other studio guests on the live broadcast, he was totally perplexed. But then he “reciprocated” by pouring a glass of wine over the “bad” devil (the last name was the program!).

Eight years earlier, the unforgettable “Sissi” actress Romy Schneider, who had long since made it into a character actress in France (“The Things of Life”, 1970), demonstrated on “The Later the Evening” (first WDR, then ARD) that a talk show can also produce sensual scandals by grabbing the condemned bank robber and young actor Burkhard Driest (“Die Verrohung des Franz Blum”, 1974) in front of the eyes of the stunned presenter Dietmar Schönherr and an audience of millions on the screen and grabbing him breathed in the opposite direction: “I like you. I even like you very much. ”Markus Lanz’s midnight chat on ZDF in 2021 is an eons away from such provocations and touches.
In the (still not over) Corona era sit the talk show host and his four guests – politician Sahra Wagenknecht (Die Linke), writer Juli Zeh (“About People”), journalist Cerstin Gammelin (SZ) and the former SPD chancellor candidate Peer Steinbrück – Without spectators: inside – in the Altona studio, civilized and at a proper distance from each other. Even the beginning of Markus Lanz (ZDF) looks broken despite all the physical distance over the knee.

Half a year before the 2009 Bundestag elections, he would have known when looking in the shaving mirror that he would not be able to become Chancellor. However, he did not want to give up – “if only because of the moral responsibility within democratic competition”. “Everything you say says your head,” complains Markus Lanz (ZDF). “You now want to reveal my inner workings”, recognizes Peer Steinbrück, but then admits “posthumous mistakes”, such as the pithy photo with the “finger finger”, which would only have been well received by minors who were not “not entitled to vote”. That would have cost him at least two percentage points at the time.
Just like in July of this year Armin Laschet laughing in the background when Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier wanted to give consolation to the flood victims. And then Peer Steinbrück, who is so prudent in itself, knocks you out: “Olaf Scholz was not elected because he is in the SPD, but even though he is in the SPD.” I bet that some party comrades are not amused by this comment will?

Such dry, unfortunately all too rare statements add spice to the often so bland, politically incorrect broadcast. The later the evening, the more uncensored the guests, as a reviewer one would be tempted to say. But it was only a brief flicker of old viciousness on public television in this country. Actually, everyone at Markus Lanz loves each other this time, and more often than not, they even agree with each other.
This is also the case with Juli Zeh’s assessment of the election campaign for the federal election in 2021. Although she was “missing a lot” here, for example “for Europe, for climate protection”, she still wants to “emphasize the positive”: The impression that in the face of the Corona- Year now everything would “polarize insanely” and could boast “extreme margins” would have been a “false analysis”. The current coalition negotiations, whether the Jamaica alliance or the traffic light alliance, showed democratic unity. That would take place behind closed doors, “without much press fanfare”.

This culminates in the fact that Sahra Wagenknecht, who was once criticized by her own ranks as a “Stalinist”, expressly praises the FDP for its unadjusted corona policy with the “defense of fundamental rights”, Juli Zeh means the term “anti-charismatic” positively with Peer Steinbrück and he sees a “unity government made up of Einstein, Helene Fischer and Tarzan” for Merkel’s successor.
