Medical emergency: Bolsonaro in the hospital – "Clinical improvement"

After his admission to the hospital, Brazil’s President Bolsonaro is said to be feeling better again.

Update from Tuesday, January 4th, 2022, 7:10 a.m.: According to official information, Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is doing better after being admitted to the hospital due to an intestinal obstruction. The government of the South American country announced on Monday that he was showing clinical improvement after inserting a nasogastric tube, citing the clinic in São Paulo. Bolsonaro has neither a fever nor a stomach ache.

The 66-year-old right-wing populist had been admitted to the hospital for the second time within six months the night before with pain in his abdomen. In July he had been treated there for several days for an intestinal obstruction.

São Paulo – Brazil’s President Jair Bolsonaro was hospitalized Monday morning for a medical emergency. There is a strong suspicion of a renewed intestinal obstruction, reported local media. Neither the press office of the right-wing president nor the treating hospital initially responded to inquiries.

According to matching media reports, the 66-year-old was brought by plane from Santa Catarina, where he had spent the year-end holidays, to the Vila Nova Star hospital in São Paulo after his arrival. On recordings of the broadcaster TV Globo you could see Bolsonaro getting out of the presidential plane.

Doctor Antônio Luiz Macedo, who had treated Bolsonaro on other occasions, told the UOL news portal that the president would undergo several tests, including computed tomography, to examine the possible intestinal obstruction. Bolsonaro had already been treated for an intestinal obstruction in mid-July. At that time he spent four days in the hospital.

Bolsonaro was attacked during the 2018 presidential campaign and stabbed in the stomach with a knife. Because of the stab wound, he had to undergo at least four operations, which made him more susceptible to bowel disease. (AFP)
