More profits than before: Liverpool, Palacio and La Comer, among other retailers, increase their sales above what they earned in 2019

Department stores and supermarkets spin two months with income above 2019, the year before the pandemic. Although they could be about to put an end to the crisis due to the pandemic, they still face inflation and high costs in logistics transport.

The sales of Soriana, Liverpool, Sanborns, and the rest of the chains that make up the National Association of Self-Service and Department Stores (ANTAD), totaled 424,800 million pesos from January to April, 5.8% more compared to 401,200 million pesos of 2019.

Two years after the start of COVID-19, the different chains operate without capacity or reduced hours, which has given them a boost despite the inflationary context in Mexico and the world.

Sales in nominal terms of stores that have been in operation for more than a year, known as Tiendas Iguales, grew 14.2% in April of this year, compared to the same month of 2021. Considering the stores that opened in the last 12 months, the growth was 16.4%, according to the latest data shared by ANTAD.

Each of the chains advances separately on the road to recovery, after they received a differentiated impact from the health crisis, which drove supermarkets with panic purchases, and plummeted the income of other chains that could not open for The restrictions.

Liverpool has been one of the best performing companies. In the first quarter of the year, it accumulated sales of 32,246.7 million pesos, which represent an advance of 26% compared to 25,586 million pesos in the same period last year, when they were still operating with reduced capacity to avoid contagion from the second wave of coronavirus in the country.

Grupo Sanborns, owned by businessman Carlos Slim, managed to exceed the sales level of 2019 by 17.6%, reporting revenues of 13,499 million pesos, according to data from the quarterly report sent to the Mexican Stock Exchange.

At the end of 2021, the commercial chains that make up ANTAD group together more than 46.6 thousand stores. The total sales area of these establishments amounts to more than 21.9 million square meters.
