Netherlands: Passenger from cruise ship overboard

A man fell from a cruise ship off the North Sea island of Texel. A search remains unsuccessful.

Texel – A passenger on the cruise ship MS Europa went overboard and, according to the Dutch Coast Guard, very likely drowned. The extensive search was unsuccessfully canceled on Monday evening off the Wadden Sea island of Texel.

There is no longer any chance of survival, said a spokesman. "Bild" had previously reported on it. The MS Europa was on its way from Hamburg to Antwerp when an elderly man went overboard about ten nautical miles northwest of Texel and fell about 27 meters deep into the North Sea. According to the Coast Guard, it was a man around 80 years old. The captain alerted the coast guard and also started a search operation on board. However, the passenger was not found there. How the incident could have come about was initially unclear.

The Coast Guard deployed a helicopter, a search aircraft and five lifeboats. The conditions were difficult, according to the Coast Guard. The sea was rough and the waves were about five meters high. dpa
