Netherlands: sharp increase in corona infections

The number of new infections continues to rise in the Netherlands. So did the number of patients in hospitals. What about the incidence?

The Hague – The sharp increase in corona infections and patient numbers in hospitals in the Netherlands continues.

In the past seven days, the number of new infections increased by 44 percent compared to the previous week, as the responsible Reich Institute for Health and Environment (RIVM) announced on Tuesday. A good 25,700 cases have been reported. According to the RIVM, the incidence is 151.

The authority sees a direct connection with the easing of the measures about three weeks ago. The distance rule of 1.5 meters was repealed. Masks only have to be worn in public transport. Proof of having been tested, vaccinated or recovered is only required before visiting restaurants.

The number of deaths also increased. In the past seven days, 48 Covid-19-related deaths have been reported, almost twice as many as the previous week. The number of Covid patients in hospitals and intensive care units increased so much that hospitals have to cancel operations again. About 80 percent of Covid patients are not vaccinated. dpa
