"North by Northwest: Wild Dogs" (ARD): Beyond Eden

For once, the relaxed, cheerful conclusion to the ARD trilogy “Nord bei Nordwest: Wilde Hunde” with Hinnerk Schönemann is not about organized crime. The TV review.

Schwanitz – Like most villages, tranquil Schwanitz on the east Holstein coast is a peaceful place. That’s why the most exciting thrillers in the ARD series “Nord bei Nordwest” were always those in which crime from the big city found its way: because either veterinarian Hauke Jacobs (Hinnerk Schönemann) or, most recently, policewoman Hannah Wagner (Jana Klinge) talked about their earlier past in the fight against organized crime. Otherwise, however, the number of offenses should be as manageable as in most other towns with a few thousand souls.

It’s probably not that easy to come up with plausible crimes, so that Jacobs, who has shared the area with her successor since the death of Wagner’s predecessor Lona Vogt, isn’t just pursuing his second job; The practice assistant Jule Christiansen (Marleen Lohse), who has been promoted to partner, takes care of the veterinary tasks anyway. In addition to fighting crime, the affection between these two, which has never been declared, is a constant theme of the ARD series “Nord bei Nordwest”, but in the long run it doesn’t fill the entire evening; at least not in a crime novel.

“North near Northwest: Wild Dogs” on ARD: For once, it’s not organized crime

Like most episodes of the ARD series “Nord bei Nordwest”*, the seventeenth begins with a scratch on the otherwise idyllic overall picture: village troublemaker Schuster (Till Huster) points out to Wagner that the wheels of her company car are on the sidewalk. Shortly thereafter, the man who has a dedicated line to the public order office no longer denounces anyone: apparently he hung himself. However, Jacobs does not believe in suicide, especially since Schuster has just ordered food from the delivery service.

The investigation leads to a nearby kennel with the beautiful name Eden. However, the operator, Kai Schwarz (Uke Bosse), is not a very likeable guy who is guaranteed to have dirt on his hands. In fact, the dog hotel is the facade of smuggling on a large scale: Schwarz uses the four-legged friends as so-called mules to transport a palliative drug that is not yet approved in the rest of the EU across the Polish-German border.

ARD crime series: “North by Northwest: Wild Dogs” with Hinnerk Schönemann

The pure crime story of the ARD series “Nord bei Nordwest” would basically also fill a series episode; The attraction of “Wilde Hunde” results from the drawing of the characters and the details with which series creator Holger Karsten Schmidt enriched his screenplay. A flower child couple (Jing Xiang, Max Thommes), for example, is very interesting. They carry out the courier trips for Black with their “Love & Peace” bus (“Don’t worry, be hippie”). Their choleric boss, who tends to like to be on 180, as his heart rate monitor regularly confirms, just calls the two “the organic idiots” because they are obviously a bit underexposed: He makes them believe that the medicines are for a children’s hospice, huh regularly filled with pictures of boys and girls waving gratefully at the camera.

With the help of the duo, however, Schmidt finally provides a hit that is visually appropriately attractively implemented by “Kommissarin Heller” director Christiane Balthasar. The idea of how Jacobs and Wagner can finally convict the villain is also very pretty. The fact that Schwarz also has to deal with partners who want to trade medicines on their own account gives the thriller another corpse, but is basically not important.

Trilogy Nord bei Nordwest with Hinnerk Schönemann: “Wild Dogs”

The same applies to a secondary level that acts like an employment measure for Marleen Lohse. In practice, a man (Felix Knopp) appears whose dog is in great danger: the animal has swallowed razor blades hidden in a bait. In this way, Schmidt can incorporate an interesting psychological phenomenon into the plot, but this part of the film has just as little to do with the actual story as the most amusing scenes in the film: Because Jacobs and Wagner are not sure whether they confiscated from the young village dealer Hash cookies actually contain drugs, they consume the cookies themselves together with Jule, which leads to all kinds of contagious silliness.

The corresponding deep relaxation is typical for “wild dogs”. The style that Balthasar chose for her first work on the series fits the story perfectly: tension only arises towards the end. Until then, thanks to various amusements, the crime thriller is particularly enjoyable as a comedy. But not only the dialogues are funny, but also visual ideas like the one when Jule, who is still under the impression of the biscuits, rotates not the fan but the ceiling. (Tilmann P.
