[Opinion] Spectrum that contributes to digital and social transformation

Regarding World Telecommunications Day, the director of the ANE takes stock of steps such as the study, use and use of the latest generation technologies, such as 5G.

Every May 17 World Telecommunications and Information Society Day is celebrated as an opportunity to promote the importance of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT); And it is that, without a doubt, the Internet has changed the way of interacting with the world, crossing communication barriers and transcending geographical borders.

In Colombia, from the National Spectrum Agency (ANE), we efficiently and effectively manage the radio spectrum, a natural resource used to provide wireless telecommunications services such as sound broadcasting (AM, FM), television, Internet access. , landlines, cell phones and satellite services, among others.

We work hand in hand with the Ministry of Information Technology and Communications, an entity that assigns frequencies to Telecommunications Network and Service Providers, which we commonly know as operators, so that they implement telecommunications networks and provide the services to users.

The result of the ANE’s work has contributed to the optimal provision of all telecommunications services, and in the last year, in particular, we have been able to contribute from our work to the continuity of work, family and personal life by connecting homes thanks to access to technology that makes use of the spectrum. This is the main tool that the ANE has to mitigate the effects of COVID-19 and contribute to the recovery of the economic and social development of our country. Not surprisingly, the last Quarterly Bulletin of the sector corresponding to the fourth quarter of 2020, records that the country in 2020, broke the record in new Internet connections with respect to the last 7 years.

From the National Government, more than 3 billion pesos have been invested in connectivity issues, this figure has allowed the growth of Mobile Internet access by more than 2.1 million, the highest in the last 3 years, Internet access Since the pandemic began, it reached 7.77 million in the country, more than 794 thousand new fixed Internet accesses in relation to the immediately previous year.

The figures are telling and very encouraging. They show that we are on the right track, and the ANE’s management has generated good results, in particular, that of providing technical advice to the Mintic for efficient spectrum management and promoting its knowledge in response to the challenges of economic development. digital and the digital transformation process required by users and companies.

In line with the mission of the ANE, we have advanced the study, use and exploitation of next-generation technologies, such as 5G, which supports speeds much higher than the mobile broadband technologies that are currently in use (up to 20 Gbps compared to up to 1 Gbps of 4G networks), enables the development of emerging applications such as advanced telemedicine and tele-education, tele-agriculture (also applicable for ICT in fishing and mining), Autonomous Vehicles, Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Virtual Reality (VR), Reality Augmented (AR), Internet of Things (IoT) and Smart Cities, among others.

Additionally, from the ANE we have been developing an important study for a future implementation in Colombia of WiFi 6, which means that in a given bandwidth more information can be sent than with current WiFi protocols and that, in turn translates into faster access to different types of content, even with more connected devices in a given area; this will allow the development of different uses and applications.

The management of the ICT sector has achieved the expansion of connectivity in the country, the progress and results we have to date have been fundamental in the midst of the crisis generated by the pandemic. Connectivity has been the main tool for the economic reactivation, entrepreneurship, work and virtual study of thousands of Colombians.

Colombia goes online and projects itself towards digital transformation. These advances have allowed growth and development in essential aspects such as education, transportation, agriculture, and more importantly, health, which has contributed to the reduction of the impact caused by the pandemic.

6G? There are already those who are developing this technology

Although there is still a large gap in the use of 5G, there are companies that have established a new standard, as well as the differences between the two generations.
