Los Angeles – The first awards were presented in Los Angeles at the start of the Oscars.
German Gerd Nefzer wins the Oscar in the Visual Effects category for the science fiction film Dune. This was announced by the US Film Academy in Los Angeles. The film composer Hans Zimmer, who lives in the USA but has German roots, also won an Oscar for the music to the film.
The two filmmakers won their second Oscar statues. Composer Zimmer had already received an award in the mid-1990s for the film music for the Disney classic “The Lion King”. Nefzer and his colleagues won the 2018 Academy Award for Visual Effects for their work on Blade Runner 2049, also directed by Denis Villeneuve.
Hans Zimmer celebrated his Oscar honors in a hotel bar in Amsterdam. The 64-year-old tweeted a photo of himself in a white terry bathrobe and holding an Oscar statuette, writing in English: “It’s 2am in Amsterdam and my daughter Zoë woke me up to go to the hotel bar. Wow!!”

Oscar for Troy Kotsur – acceptance speech in sign language
The Oscar for Best Supporting Actor goes to Troy Kotsur. The 53-year-old American was recognized for his performance in “Coda”. In the tragic comedy he plays the father of 17-year-old Ruby, who is the only member of the fisherman family of four who can hear and who dreams of a career as a singer. Kotsur is deaf and gave his moving acceptance speech in sign language. He especially thanked his father, from whom he learned sign language and much more.
Actress Ariana DeBose wins the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress. The 31-year-old American was recognized for her performance in West Side Story. She plays the role of Anita in the Steven Spielberg musical. The show opened with a performance by artist Beyoncé.
In advance, the first guests arrived on the red carpet in Los Angeles. Among them were actor Will Smith, tennis icons Serena and Venus Williams and filmmaker Maggie Gyllenhaal. Actor Timothée Chalamet came with a jacket but no shirt. Mila Kunis with her partner Ashton Kutcher. Both had recently raised millions for people in Ukraine.
