Outer Law: Whose Space Resources Are?

Production: Pablo Cantudo

The Moon, the minerals of the meteorites, the future discoveries that the human being makes outside the Earth, are subject to a series of international treaties , on which Juan Manuel is a well-versed expert. He is a professor of Public International Law and International Relations and a member of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) in the specialized panel for the arbitration of disputes related to outer space activities.

Last April, the White House issued an executive order in direct violation of the Moon Treaty. Many fear that the United States intends to privatize the Moon or, in some way, claim it for itself. What can be done if this happens? What does Donald Trump intend with this order? What implications does it have for international law?

In the next few years a series of missions off Earth are scheduled; among them, the Artemis mission, to return to the Moon. What are the prospects that the Moon could become one more tourist destination in the coming decades?

Juan Manuel de Faramiñán answers these and other interesting questions about extraterrestrial law in this talk by Planeta Muy.
