Is Sophia Thomalla too direct? RTL spices up its latest dating shows with the quick-witted presenter. One scene was even deleted afterwards. Now the 32-year-old moderates “Date or Drop”.
Berlin – Dating shows are piling up in TV and streaming programs – but some no longer really ignite. With Sophia Thomalla as the quick-witted presenter, RTL has now brought a new edge to its formats.
A scene with her on the show “Are You The One? – Realitystars in Love ”, the broadcaster even had to subsequently delete it on the TVnow streaming platform. On Friday, the daughter of actress Simone Thomalla will present the new dating show “Date or Drop” for the first time from 11pm.
RTL announces that the 32-year-old will comment “with her inimitable quick wittedness”. So the mandate is clear: Thomalla should use pithy slogans to enhance the format in which so-called “pickers” have their backs to date candidates and only have to decide on the basis of what has been said and the voice.
Thomalla polarizes – as an advertising model, on Instagram, on television. As a moderator, she also likes to play with limits. Her “inimitable quick-wittedness” made her the secret winner of the show on her debut in the second season “Are You The One?”.
An example: A candidate who got in close contact with two women without informing the two of them was confronted by the moderator in front of the assembled team: “Did you actually tell Laura that you slept with Leonie?” Talking head and neck, Thomalla said: “Actually, you don’t deserve a perfect match or a woman on this show.”
Limit exhausted – there was applause on social media. In an interview with RTL Thomalla said at the time: “I moderate the program and confront the people with their actions at the end of the day. It’s really fun! “
Afterwards, she took it too far in “Are You The One – Reality Stars in Love”: The Berliner addressed a very intimate topic, which the candidate concerned was visibly uncomfortable with. There was criticism on social media, the broadcaster even deleted the scene afterwards. On the Instagram page of the show it was said that there had been a conversation on a sensitive topic “that we shouldn’t have shown like this”. Crossed the border.
The order remains: for “Date or Drop”, RTL promises that Thomalla will chat honestly and directly with the candidates and give viewers the chance to learn something about their story and character. The show is reminiscent of the successful RTL format “Take Me Out”.
Meanwhile, the 32-year-old herself continues to enjoy the fact that the audience learns relatively little about her own story. Most recently, she played with rumors about a relationship with tennis star Alexander Zverev.
