Police reveal that David Amess was killed by a Somali "linked to Islamist terrorism"

The British Police have declared the murder this past Friday of the Conservative MP David Amess as a terrorist attack, as reported by the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Dean Haydon .

Amess was stabbed to death during a meeting with his voters in Essex County by a 25-year-old British man of Somali descent , who was arrested at the scene of the incident.

The detainee, whose name has not been released, “shares the same details” as an individual who appeared on the Prevent program dedicated to those who were “at risk of ideological radicalization.”

Meanwhile, Haydon has indicated that the incident was a terrorist act with a potential motivation linked to extremist Islamism, “according to a statement collected by the British media, according to sources from The Guardian newspaper.

Acted solo

As part of the investigation, officers have tracked down two homes in the London area but police believe the individual acted alone and are not looking for any other suspects at the moment.

In a statement issued at dawn, the London Metropolitan Police (Met) said that the murder of Amess in a church in Leigh-on-Sea, in the county of Essex, “has been declared a terrorist incident, and the Command against Met terrorism will lead the investigation.

“The Senior National Terrorism Police Oversight Coordinator, Deputy Commissioner Dean Haydon, has formally declared the incident terrorism. The initial investigation has revealed a possible motivation linked to Islamist extremism , ”the note said.

The investigation is being led by the Met’s Counter-Terrorism Command, which works in collaboration with colleagues from the Eastern Region Specialized Operations Unit (ERSOU) and Essex Police, the official note added.

“As part of the investigation, officers are conducting two-way searches in the London area,” according to police.

The authorities believe that the suspect “acted alone” and are not looking for anyone else in relation to the incident, although investigations into the circumstances continue, reports the police note collected by Efe .

More security

Meanwhile, many British MPs have asked this Saturday that their security measures be reviewed and are studying whether they will be able to continue receiving citizens in person, after the murder on Friday of the conservative David Amess when he was serving his constituents in his constituency in eastern England .

Longtime Labor MP Harriet Harman , 71, told the BBC that she will write to Prime Minister Boris Johnson asking him to support a special conference where all parties debate the issue.

Harman explained that the so-called Conference of the Speaker of the House of Commons is an event that is held exceptionally when there is “a serious issue that concerns Parliament or democracy”, under the leadership of the Speaker of the House, currently Lindsay Hoyle .

“I don’t think anyone wants a situation where the police have to register every voter, but surely there is a safer way to carry out our activities,” he said.
