Quake in Haiti: 24 people saved after more than a week

On August 14, a severe earthquake struck the southwest of the Caribbean state of Haiti. Over 1.2 million people were affected. After more than a week, however, survivors could still be rescued.

Les Cayes – A good week after the devastating earthquake in Haiti with more than 2,200 dead, 24 survivors were rescued. Among them were four children, as the civil protection authority of the Caribbean state announced.

A rescue team reached the people who were reported missing on Mount Pic Macaya. They were flown by helicopter to the nearby community of Camp-Perrin for treatment. They were given food and hygiene kits. At first there were no further details.

130,000 houses damaged or destroyed

The 7.2 magnitude quake occurred on August 14 in the southwest of the Caribbean state at a depth of around ten kilometers. At least 2207 people died, according to civil defense, a good 12,000 were injured and more than 300 were still missing. Around 130,000 houses were damaged or destroyed.

According to the UN Children’s Fund Unicef, 1.2 million people were affected by the quake. Haiti, the poorest country in America, experiences severe natural disasters time and again. In 2010, more than 220,000 people died there after an earthquake. dpa
