The 76-year-old thinks that his way of life can save the world on a small scale. He would like to see less criticism from some young people, but more personal will to change.
Rome (dpa) – The 76-year-old extreme mountaineer Reinhold Messner does not believe in young, critical people who are not ready for changes in their own everyday lives.
“I do not like young people who say that we old have destroyed the world without them having the strength to change their lifestyle,” said the Italian of the newspaper “Corriere della Sera” on Thursday.
Messner had recently married for the third time. He and his new wife, about 35 years his junior from Luxembourg, Diane Schumacher, share some passions, including for the mountains.
“At my age, it’s sweet and comfortable to be around. I’ve done hundreds of solo ascents, now I can share those passions, interests and lifestyles with one person, the difference being that my wife is faster, ”enthused Messner. “In our valley, on our farm, we can live self-sufficiently with little and show that the world can be saved even in this small way.”
The South Tyrolean himself was active in environmental politics and advocates sustainability and climate protection.
