Comet hunter Rosetta from the European Space Agency (ESA) will fly over Earth's orbit tomorrow, November 13, to take the precise momentum to begin the last phase of his ten-year journey outside our Solar System . Its speed in our orbit will be 13.3 kilometers per second and it will pass over the Indian Ocean, just south of the Indonesian island of Java. Several observations of the Earth-Moon system have been planned before the spacecraft leaves to study comet 67 / P Churyumov Gerasimenko .
This will be Rosetta's third orbital flyby of our planet. The maneuver will provide gravitational energy to propel the space probe on its journey into deep space. Rosetta is expected to reach its final destination in May 2014 . Once alongside the comet, it will detach from the lander Philae , which will land on the surface of 67 / P Churyumov Gerasimenko to conduct studies on its composition. In this phase, the probe will escort the comet on its journey to the Sun, studying it in detail for two years.
Comets' chemical composition has hardly changed since their formation, so they keep a record of the "infancy" of the solar system. With the data collected by Rosetta, scientists aspire to reconstruct the history of our space neighborhood .
