Russia sanctions circumvented: oligarch yacht cannot be confiscated

The oligarch yacht Dilbar cannot be confiscated in Hamburg. The reason: a trick conceals who owns the luxury yacht.

Hamburg – The luxury yacht Dilbar is said to belong to the Russian oligarch Alisher Usmanov, who has a close connection to Russian President Vladimir Putin*. The oligarch is therefore on the sanctions list of the EU. He actively supported Putin and decision-makers who “are responsible for the annexation of Crimea and the destabilization of Ukraine*, materially or financially,” according to the EU* statement.

The oligarch from Russia* is no longer allowed to enter the EU. Its assets can also be frozen. At first it was said that the 600 million yacht had also been confiscated. This was announced by the Hamburg Economics Senator Michael Westhagemann (independent). “You can assume that no more yachts will go out from now on,” said Westhagemann on Tuesday (03/03/2022).

Oligarch yacht cannot be confiscated – owner not identified

In his statement, Westhagemann is said to have only referred to the suspension of the shipment of goods to Russia. However, this is different from direct sanctions against Russia* and its oligarchs. “As far as we know, the yacht has not been confiscated,” says the spokeswoman for the economic authority in Hamburg. So far there has been no such official order. The Federal Ministry of Economics announced the same.

Customs revealed the reason why the Dilbar has not yet been confiscated: in order to take a ship like the Dilbar out of service, you need proof of who owns it. According to the US magazine Forbes, the yacht is said to have been registered in the Cayman Islands and belong to a holding company. According to dpa, this is a common procedure to disguise the owner. Nevertheless, the yacht will probably still be in the port of Hamburg for a while, where the Blohm+Voss shipyard is still carrying out repair work on the ship.

Despite sanctions against oligarchs from Russia: luxury yacht Dilbar cannot be arrested

France* is already ahead of Germany in confiscating oligarch yachts. In response to the war between Russia and Ukraine, French customs arrested the yacht of a company on Thursday night (03.03.2022), the main shareholder of which is said to be on the sanctions list. At the beginning of the customs control on the Mediterranean coast not far from Marseille, the ship wanted to leave the port, it said.

The confiscation of the Dilbar would probably be a loss for Putin’s confidante that should not be underestimated. She is considered the most expensive luxury yacht in the world. Built in 2016, the Dilbar is 156 meters long and 24 meters wide. The luxury ship is said to cost 600 million euros. The USA* and Great Britain* have also put Russian oligarchs on their sanctions lists due to the developments in the Ukraine conflict*. (dpa, df) *fr.de is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA.
