Schäfer gives six hypothermic runners refuge in his cave – and thus saves their lives

A shepherd has given refuge in his cave to six ultra-marathon runners who had been surprised by a storm. He probably saved their lives with it.

Gansu – Zhu Keming is currently celebrated as a hero in China. The shepherd took marathon runners who had been caught by a storm in his cave and looked after them. His selflessness is a matter of course for him: he is “a completely normal person who has done a completely normal thing,” says the Chinese. Unfortunately, 21 of the 172 participants in the marathon were less fortunate, as reported by the “Stern”. They perished in the storm.

Zhu Keming himself was also surprised by the storm. As he was about to tend his sheep, the temperature dropped unexpectedly and it suddenly became very windy. However, because he is well versed in the northwestern province of Gansu and is therefore familiar with the local conditions, he was well prepared: In his shelter he had food, drink and clothing in case of emergency.

The shepherd was surprised by the storm himself

This benefited the six lucky runners whom the shepherd had taken in and looked after in his cave. Presumably he even saved his life with it. Although it was no rescue from a snowy hell (tz.de reported *), the storm still brought many pitfalls.

At first, it was only one of the runners whom Zhu Keming brought to his shelter. After he had provided him with fresh clothes and even massages for the ice-cold hands and feet, he informed him that other participants in the marathon probably needed his help in the storm.

The shepherd put himself in danger with his help

Without hesitation, the kind-hearted shepherd ventured out into the extreme cold one more time to save even more men. One of them was lying face down on the freezing cold floor. Zhu Keming carried the man into the cave and wrapped him in blankets.

The rescued men feel deeply connected to the shepherd for his selfless act. “I can’t say how grateful I am to the man who saved me,” wrote runner Zhang Xiaotao on a Chinese communication platform. “Without him, I would have stayed out there.” The only downer for the hero: He’s sorry that he couldn’t save more runners from death. * tz.de is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA.
