Second warmest July ever recorded in Europe

It was warmer than this year in July in Europe. In 2010, a violent heat wave in Russia drove up temperatures.

London – Driven by the heat in the east of the continent, last month was the second warmest July ever recorded in Europe.

The European climate change service Copernicus (C3S) announced on Thursday in London that July 2021 was significantly warmer than average over large parts of northern, eastern and southeastern Europe. There were heat waves between the Baltic States and the eastern Mediterranean, and the heat conditions in the southeast of the continent were particularly difficult at the end of the month.

Globally, the month, together with the same month last year, was the third warmest July since the beginning of Copernicus records – it was only slightly below the values of 2016 and 2019. From a global perspective, July is usually the warmest month of the year, even if August sometimes has higher temperatures may have.

In a European July before, it was only warmer in 2010, when, among other things, a violent heat wave raged over western Russia. This time the record for the maximum daily temperature in Northern Ireland was broken. The temperatures in the east of Iceland and Greenland were also well above average. In contrast, the month in a strip between Portugal and Germany was a little cooler than the average for the comparable years 1991 to 2020.

The EU’s climate change service produces monthly reports on air temperature, sea ice and the water cycle. It is based on measurement data from satellites, ships, aircraft and weather stations around the world as well as model calculations. dpa
