Sicily: Etna spits out kilometers of ash cloud – airport closed

Etna volcano in Sicily is spewing smoke again. A kilometer-high ash cloud can be seen in the pictures. Catania Airport is temporarily closed.

Catania – The Etna volcano on the Italian island of Sicily does not rest. Just a little over a week ago, there was a spectacular eruption. Now the highest active volcano in Europe spat lava and ash again. This also has an impact on flight operations in the region.

The ash cloud reached a height of about ten kilometers on Monday afternoon (February 21, 2022), the National Institute for Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) in Catania announced. The institute also provided information about the renewed volcanic eruption via Twitter. The volcano erupted from its southeast crater. A dense black cloud was seen on live footage and was forecast to be drifting southeast.

Etna volcano in Sicily has erupted again: the airport closes operations

There were initially no reports of damage or injuries. However, local residents reported locally raining ash and dust both on the Telegram platform and on fr.de, according to the German Press Agency (dpa). The airport in Catania in the south of Mount Etna temporarily ceased operations. No flight could land or take off, the airport wrote on Twitter.

Most recently, on February 10th, the more than 3300 meter high volcano Etna offered an impressive natural spectacle with a nocturnal eruption with lava shooting up. Three streams of glowing rock flowed a few hundred yards down the mountain. A column of smoke from around 8000 meters rose into the sky.

Etna: Recently more volcanic activity again – spectacular eruptions

More activity has recently been observed on Mount Etna. INGV experts assume that new magma has started to accumulate. About the same thing happened a year ago in February 2021, when there was more magma in Etna. The volcano had been very active in the past year. Spectacular eruptions occurred regularly. The volcano erupted around 50 times in a series of eruptions by October.

Researchers are also concerned that the Etna volcano has been in motion for some time. The 3350 meter high volcano on a slipping slope moves further towards the sea year after year. A team from the University of Ocean Research in Kiel therefore investigated the effects. (svw with material from dpa)
