Storms in Italy: Both the region around Naples and Venice are preparing for heavy rains, storms and floods. High warning levels apply.
Naples / Venice – In the northern Italian lagoon city of Venice, the authorities expected another flood on Wednesday evening. The forecast as of Wednesday morning assumed an increase of up to 1.40 meters for the late evening (10 p.m.). This would mean the highest level of alert. Almost 60 percent of the pedestrian paths will then be under water, as it was said. From 6 p.m. the city wants to open the flood protection gates of the “Moses” system.
It consists of 78 barriers that the city of Venice can raise at three entrances to the lagoon and has been in operation since autumn 2020. The billion dollar project is controversial. Corruption, bureaucracy, a lack of decisions, political and economic self-interest delayed construction for a long time. Experts also believe that it is possible that the system will have to be active all year round from 2075 if climate change and thus the rise in sea levels are not decisively slowed down.
Storm in Italy: schools and cemeteries around Naples closed
Due to the approaching storm, schools and cemeteries have also been closed as a precaution in the south of Italy. The mayor of Naples, Gaetano Manfredi, decided to close a large part of the cemeteries and parks on Wednesday (03.11.2021) because there was danger from falling branches from trees, as stated in an “urgent order” from the municipality of Naples on Tuesday (02.11 .2021) emerged.
Among other things, schools on the popular holiday islands of Ischia and Procida on the Gulf of Naples should remain closed on Wednesday, Mayor Enzo Ferrandino determined. The civil protection authority had issued an increased warning level (dark orange) for the southern Italian region of Campania. The meteorologists expected heavy rain showers and storms. The municipality of Ischia asks the entire population for “extreme caution”.
Only at the end of October did a violent storm in southern Italy cause destruction. Its consequences claimed several lives. Northern Italy had to deal with floods in August. (kke / dpa)
