In Würzburg, there is concern that the so-called “walkers” on Shrove Monday could mix criticism of the Corona measures with carnival.
Würzburg – The carnival in Bavaria has been cancelled. Much to the chagrin of many carnival lovers throughout the Free State. The disappointment is particularly great in Würzburg*, as this is where one of the largest carnival parades in southern Germany traditionally takes place. So next Shrove Monday there will probably be no colorfully decorated wagons with jesters shitting camels through the city. On the other hand, those who are sure to stroll through the streets of Würzburg are the so-called “walkers”. But the OB doesn’t like that at all.
Shrove Monday in Würzburg: the city forbids almost any carnival activity
In the meantime, they can be found in every larger Bavarian city – the “Monday strollers”. They mostly protest peacefully against the state’s corona measures. Many of them will take to the streets again on Shrove Monday. In Würzburg even under a motto, as the city writes on its website. “No more battered children’s souls – children must be the focus of our society again. Culture for children is essential. Free breathing, free school without compulsory testing & quarantine, free development in all areas of life for children and young people without vaccination,” is the unwieldy credo of the demonstrators walking.
It starts on the Mainwiesen. Therefore, the city also warns of traffic obstructions from 3:30 p.m. But that’s not the only concern in Würzburg City Hall. The homepage further states: “This demonstration is not a carnival procession or a substitute event for a carnival procession!” In addition, no sweets or sweets may be thrown and alcohol is also taboo. The only thing the city is not allowed to forbid is disguise due to the right of assembly.
Würzburg Mayor warns the “walkers”
However, the head of the town hall already has bad thoughts. Christian Schuchardt (CSU) therefore commented as follows: “The attempt by the critics of the Corona measures to reinterpret or appropriate the tradition of traditional carnival parades is encroaching because traditional customs are instrumentalized and political mood is created with children and costumes. The city of Würzburg considers this instrumentalization of carnival with the chosen day (‘Rosenmontag’) and the displayed form as a procession as tasteless.” *Merkur.de/bayern is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA
