Summer effect: In June more tourists arrive in Mexico and leave 2,261 million dollars

The number of tourists who arrived in Mexico and the dollar expenditure they made in the country increased during June, reported the National Institute of Statistics and Geography.

Summer brought 3.3 million tourists to Mexico during June, an increase of 7.8% compared to the same month in 2021.

In addition, according to Inegi figures, the expenditure made by tourists in the country increased 20.2% in its annual comparison, with a total expenditure of 2,261.8 million dollars.

Each tourist who entered Mexico spent an average of 672.50 dollars in the country, which represents an increase of 11.5%.

However, if the data is broken down by type of tourist, it can be seen that there was a 3.1% decrease in the average spending of inbound tourists –those who cross the border strip and spend at least one night in a destination in the country. – compared to June 2021. Border tourists, for their part, increased their average spending by 23.7%.

On the other hand, during June, 1,098,905 international tourists left the country to visit other destinations, which represents an increase of 12.1% compared to the same month of 2021.

The total expenditure made by these tourists abroad was 545.4 million dollars, 16.8% more than in June 2021. And the average expenditure of each tourist was 382.07 dollars, a drop of 4.8% per year.

The number of tourists in Mexico grows, but spending in the country slows down

Inflation and the risk of a recession are obstacles to the full recovery of tourism. Visitor numbers are still 33% below pre-pandemic levels.
