The red planet has scientists baffled by a strange phenomenon to which we cannot yet give an answer. It all started in 2012 when a group of amateur astronomers managed with their telescopes and high-resolution cameras, to capture some images with strange plumes of clouds emerging at the edge of the disk of Mars. Since then, the appearance of these huge clouds at sunrise on Mars remains a mystery.
Two different teams of German astronomers (from the Center for Astronomy at the University of Heidelberg and the Max Planck Institute for Astronomy in Heidelberg) have certified the finding of a rather particular exoplanet. It has been baptized as Kepler-432b and it is one of the densest and most massive planets known today. The research results have been published in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.
An international team of astrophysicists has managed to capture a unique event in astronomy: the birth of a quadruple star system in the constellation of Perseus that represents one of the 48 constellations of Ptolemy and is also one of the 88 modern constellations (and also where they come from the famous Perseids).
By measuring the rotation of the gas and stars that make up our galaxy, scientists have found that there is a large amount of dark matter between the Solar System and the center of the Milky Way.
We review, month by month, all the astronomical events that we can enjoy in 2015, the International Year of Light: meteor showers, eclipses, supermoons ...
A team of scientists led by the University of Birmingham (United Kingdom) has discovered a solar system with five planets very similar in size to that of Earth, which, according to astroeismological calculations, dates back to the beginning of the galaxy. It is the oldest known solar system in the Milky Way.
A team of astronomers from the Leiden Observatory (Netherlands) and the University of Rochester (USA) has discovered a ring system close to a star similar to the Sun, named 'J1407'. The finding has been published in the Astrophysical Journal.
Although the Philae probe has been asleep almost since it landed on the comet in November (but is expected to reactivate between May and June of this year), the Rosetta mission follows the comet and thus unraveling its mysteries. Now, thanks to its records, the European Space Agency (ESA) has published in the journal Science a total of seven articles in great detail of this primitive and distant object that it will continue to pursue until the end of this year or even more.
