The star who closed his factory

In the constellation Taurus, there is a star called TYC 8241 2652. It is located 450 light-years from Earth and is barely ten million years old. Until recently, it was an ordinary star, a young analog of our Sun apparently in the midst of planet formation. But then the star did something unheard of: he turned off the lights and closed the factory.

In the Sun there are supergiant tornadoes

An international team of scientists claims to have identified the reason why the Sun's atmosphere is more than 300 times hotter than its surface: supergiant tornadoes that would inject heat into the outer layers of the star. As the authors explain in Nature, the research has been carried out by comparing images from the Swedish solar telescope and those taken by NASA's Solar Observatory, and it has been determined that bright spots on the surface of the Sun and the atmosphere correspond to eddies.

The European archive of the Hubble telescope is already in Spain

From now on, the European Space Astronomy Center (ESAC) in Villanueva de la Cañada (Madrid) will host the Hubble scientific data. In this way, the European Space Telescope Archive will be integrated with the databases of the other ESA (European Space Agency) missions, which will be available to researchers around the world.

NASA launches X-ray telescope to search for black holes

NASA's NuSTAR (Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array) space telescope was successfully launched into space on Wednesday. Thus began his mission to unveil the secrets of black holes and other exotic objects in the universe.

Europe will build the world's largest telescope

Coinciding with the celebration of its 50th anniversary, the European Southern Observatory (ESO) has launched the construction of the largest optical / infrared telescope in the world. The European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) will be a 39.3 meter diameter segmented mirror telescope, located in Cerro Armazones (Chile). It will be four to five times larger than current state-of-the-art installations of this type, and will gather around 15 times more light.

What future awaits the Milky Way?

Three new studies released in the Astrophysical Journal suggest that the Milky Way and its neighboring Andromeda will merge into a new and gigantic elliptical galaxy within four billion years. The solar system will shift and occupy a position much further from the galactic heartland.

Hubble Photographs One Spiral Galaxy Within Another

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has captured a new image of the spiral galaxy known as ESO 498-G5. An interesting feature of this galaxy is that its spiral arms reach all the way to the center itself, so the core of ESO 498-G5 looks a bit like a miniature spiral galaxy. This type of structure contrasts with the star-filled elliptical centers present in many other spiral galaxies, which appear as incandescent masses.

The last transit of Venus of the century

On the next 5 and 6 June a very rare astronomical event will take place: from Earth it will be possible to observe how Venus crosses in front of the Sun. Scientists and amateur astronomers around the world are already preparing to observe this phenomenon. The last transit occurred in June 2004, and will not be repeated until the year 2117.
