They discover a new type of planet without a star

Astronomer David Bennett and his colleagues at the University of Notre Dame have discovered a new type of planets. They are dark bodies, with a mass similar to Jupiter, that float isolated in space, away from any hot stars. The researchers, publishing their finding in the journal Nature, suspect that these planets were expelled from developing solar systems.

When talking about the extraordinary natural landscapes of the Canary Islands, many still do not think of their skies and that these islands constitute an exceptional astronomical viewpoint in the world. With the aim of training professionals to help interpret the cultural and natural heritage of the Canarian sky, the IAC has launched the accreditation course for the first Starlight Guides.

Portrait of a dying star

The telescope of the La Silla Observatory (Chile) of the European Organization for Astronomical Research (ESO) has captured an image of the nebula NGC 3582 in which the gigantic gas loops that are expelled by the dying stars are observed and that, according to experts have pointed out, they have a "surprising" resemblance to solar prominences.

The atmospheres of Earth and Titan look alike

Researchers at the CSIC have found a common link in the origin of the atmospheres of the Earth and the satellite of Saturn Titan. Analysis of data obtained by the Cassini-Huygens mission suggests that the chemical evolution of both atmospheres was marked by the last great bombardment of asteroids and comets during the formation of the Solar System, about 3.9 billion years ago.

NASA discovers a horseshoe-orbiting asteroid

Most near-Earth asteroids are egg-shaped, with eccentric orbits that move directly through the inner solar system. However, a new object discovered by NASA's WISE infrared telescope, named 2010 SO16, is different. Its orbit is almost circular, so it cannot get close to any other planet in the solar system except Earth.

The most intense cosmic explosion ever

Three NASA space observatories, Hubble, Swift and Chandra, have teamed up to study one of the most intense cosmic explosions in the history of astronomy. One week after the outbreak, high-energy radiation continues to appear and disappear in the constellation Draco, where it was discovered by the Swift telescope on March 28.

How can you escape from a black hole?

ESA astronomers have detected for the first time the presence of magnetic fields very close to a black hole that some particles take advantage of to escape from the dark gravitational well. The finding has been possible thanks to the observations of the Integral satellite of the European Space Agency (ESA).

The astrophysicist at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) Daniel López used the IAC80 telescope at the Teide Observatory to capture the 26 photographs that make up this spectacular image of the "supermoon" that lit up the sky last week.
