Remains of a crested flying dinosaur found in Cuenca

Pterosaurs were reptiles that diversified during the Mesozoic (between 250 and 65 million years ago) modifying their body design for flight in a very different way from birds and bats. A new species of these ancient flying reptiles has recently been discovered at the Las Hoyas site (Cuenca), and has just been described in the journal PLoS ONE by a Spanish team of paleontologists in which experts from France and Brazil also participate.

The first feathered megalosaurus

150 million years ago a megalosaurus covered with filamentous feathers, similar to fine hair, lived in Germany. Paleontologists who have discovered its fossil remains have named it Sciurumimus because of its bushy tail, in honor of the squirrels of the genus Sciurus. It is the first case of feathered megalosaurus that has been described.

Dinosaurs were much lighter than previously thought

A team of biologists from the University of Manchester has developed a new technique to accurately measure the weight and size of dinosaurs, discovering that they weren't as heavy as previously thought. The conclusions are published in the journal 'Biology Letters'.

The flatulence of dinosaurs heated the prehistoric Earth

Sauropod dinosaurs could have produced enough greenhouse gas methane with their flatulence to increase the Earth's temperature millions of years ago, causing their own "global warming", according to a study published in the journal Current Biology.

The Velociraptor's Last Meal

Scientists have discovered bones of a pterodactyl - a gigantic flying reptile - in the hollow of the stomach of a Velociraptor that lived in the Gobi Desert (present-day Mongolia) 75 million years ago. The findings suggest that this dinosaur, a carnivore with sickle-shaped claws, could have been primarily a scavenger, as the devoured pterosaur was too large to be considered prey for it.

The murderous smile of the tyrannosaurus

Until recently, most researchers only took into account the variation in the size of Tyrannosaurus rex's teeth when studying the smile of this extinct carnivore from the time of the dinosaurs.

What does opisthotonos mean?

It is a posture characterized by the fact that the body is bent backwards in the shape of an inverted "c".
