CERN discovers two new unpublished particles

The LHCb experiment of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) of CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research located in Switzerland, has discovered two new particles of the baryonic family, that is, those that are made up of quarks. They are Xi_b'- and Xi_b * - and, although they had already been described, they had not been seen until now. The finding has been published in the journal Physical Review Letters.

"We can understand the physical laws of the universe as if they were God"

Kip Thorne (Utah 1940) already advised Carl Sagan when he wrote his famous novel Contact. Now he has scientifically supervised the latest science fiction movie about space travel: Interstellar. We chatted with him about galaxy travel, the existence of God, time travel, wormholes, and the future of our planet.

The most advanced thermometer is made of light

The new thermometer developed by a team of physicists from the Institute for Photonics and Advanced Detection at the University of Adelaide in Australia is three times more sensitive than the most advanced one built to date.

They recreate a supernova in the laboratory

A team of scientists from the University of Oxford has recreated a supernova (stellar explosion) in the laboratory with the help of the Vulcan laser facility at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (United Kingdom), with beams 60 billion times more powerful than a laser pointer.

They manage to create an isolated X-ray attosecond pulse

An international team of researchers from the universities of Colorado (USA), Tsing Hua (Taiwan) and Salamanca (Spain), has managed to generate and measure an isolated attosecond pulse in the X-ray regime. The finding has been published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).

They discover how to turn light into matter

After 80 years of testing, a team of physicists from Imperial College London (United Kingdom) has discovered how to create matter from light. This finding is a milestone in physics: testing the reality of a theory formulated in 1934 by scientists Breit and Wheeler.

CERN confirms the existence of exotic hadrons

The European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) has confirmed to have found a very rare type of particle, baptized as Z (4430). It is a subatomic particle but it does not match either of the two existing categories of hadrons. It is an exotic hadron.

A nanoparticle violates the second law of thermodynamics

In the world of science to say that something will never happen is almost a good joke, thankfully. Now, a nanoparticle has defied the laws of thermodynamics, specifically the second, by being able to transfer heat to an even hotter gas. The results of the work have been published in the journal Nature Nanotechnology.
