The universe could exist without the need for a Big Bang

Researchers from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya · BarcelonaTech (UPC) have shown with mathematical models that the universe is expanding at an accelerated rate due to a small cosmological constant that acts against gravity, as experimentally evidenced by cosmological theories of the last few years.

Carbon onions: the most complex molecules in the universe

Researchers at the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias (IAC) have found evidence that the presence of "carbon onions" and other large molecules derived from fullerenes (a form of carbon) could be widespread in space. These are the most complex molecules observed so far, and their finding has important implications for understanding circumstellar and interstellar physico-chemistry, as well as molecular processes in the later stages of the evolution of stars.

Portraits of the Universe in 2012 – NGC 1073

Some of the images captured throughout 2012 by the Hubble Space Telescope, which has been in orbit for 22 years, have revealed a new face of the universe. The same goes for the Spitzer Space Telescope. I show you

A black hole roams the Universe

A huge black hole could be being ejected from its galaxy at several million kilometers per hour, according to a study carried out by scientists from the Smithsonian Institute of Astrophysics (USA). These findings also verify the existence of gravitational waves predicted by Einstein's theory of relativity.

The European Southern Observatory turns half a century

The European Southern Observatory (ESO) celebrates this month of October 50 years since the signing of its founding agreement. After half a century, ESO has become the most productive ground-based astronomical observatory in the world, operating three world-class observatories in Chile: La Silla, Paranal and Chajnantor.

Here is the deepest picture of the universe

By combining the best images of galaxies taken in recent years by the Hubble telescope, NASA astronomers have created the deepest image of the universe obtained to date. Specifically, it combines 2,000 different photos taken during two million seconds, and contains 5,500 galaxies

They discover a star that hides the secret of eternal youth

A team of astronomers has identified a star in the globular cluster Messier 4 (NGC 6121), in the constellation Scorpio, in which the secret of eternal youth apparently resides. This large sphere made up of tens of thousands of ancient stars is one of the closest and most studied clusters in the Milky Way.

A mission to study the dark side of the universe

ESA's Euclid mission, designed to explore the dark side of the Universe, has already started the construction phase. This mission was selected in October 2011 with Solar Orbiter as one of the first two M-class missions of the Agency's Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 program. The committee has agreed to draft a memorandum of understanding between ESA and NASA through which the US space agency will collaborate on the mission by providing the infrared detectors.
