The tiny moon Enceladus on the planet Saturn has just become a strong candidate for life after NASA's Cassini space probe has found a huge ocean of liquid water under miles of ice.
The United States Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) has discovered water vapor in the atmosphere of a planet outside our solar system. It is tau Boo b, an exotic planet classified as "hot Jupiter", which orbits very close to its star tau Bootis and is about 50 light years from Earth. The work has been published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.
Apparently the writer Jules Verne was not far off when in 1864 he envisioned a "Journey to the center of the Earth" in which the protagonists found themselves in an authentic ocean in the depths of our globe. Although it is not an ocean, the discovery of a water-rich diamond offers new evidence for the existence of large volumes of water in the depths of the Earth.
ESA's and NASA's Hubble Space Telescope is not stopping to bear scientific fruit. As they have just reported, the latest of their findings has been the discovery of eruptions of water vapor from the surface of Europa, one of the main moons of Jupiter that is covered by a thick layer of ice.
The team of researchers in charge of the "Mars Science Laboratory" mission publishes an important discovery today in the journal Nature. The Martian rover Curiosity has found sedimentary rocks in the vicinity of Gale Crater that suggest the existence of a freshwater lake 3.6 billion years ago.
Two teams of scientists have detected, through data collected by the Hubble telescope, the presence of water in the atmosphere of five planets belonging to other star systems.
