Talks are progressing at Cerrejón to end the mine's closure of operations

The unblocking of Puerto Bolívar and the willingness of the Media Luna and Cerrejón community to have an open and honest conversation is the first step to ending the inactivity at the coal mine.

The temporary cessation of operations at the Cerrejón mine due to blockades that impede normal activity at the Puerto Bolívar plant and at kilometer 17 of the railroad could come to an end soon. The rapprochement between the promoters of the strike and the representatives of the company is progressing on good terms.

Company spokespersons announced the unblocking of Puerto Bolívar and the willingness of the Media Luna and Cerrejón community to have an open and honest conversation.

A statement from the mining company says that with the support of the authorities, a dialogue has begun between the parties “in which we trust that we can reach agreements that avoid new blockades.”

The president of Cerrejón, Claudia Bejarano stated that the company “is committed to maintaining an open and constructive dialogue with all the people with whom it interacts. The lifting of the roads actually gives us the opportunity to talk with the Media Luna community to listen to their concerns ”.

The company points out that the sustained restart of operations will be possible with the lifting of the blockade on the railway line, which began on May 5.

The mining company’s report clarifies that although the company has been open to maintaining a dialogue, it is important that the blockade of the railway line is ended and the possibility of reinstatement of workers who were separated from the company be excluded from the talks. This is the deadlock in the talks, the company said in a statement.

However, Cerrejón emphasizes that the unblocking of the Puerto Bolívar facilities will allow the transportation of fuel, by means of tank trucks, to the mine. He admits that the event that generated the force majeure in Cerrejón “remains, given that road transport is insufficient and it will take several days to rebuild an inventory to ensure the continuity of operations in a sustained manner.”

The mining company reiterates that “illegal blockades affect us all. To the workers and contractor companies that see their contracts temporarily suspended, to the communities that cannot receive the water that we deliver by train and to the country and the department that lose billions of pesos ”.
