Tatort star Vladimir Burlakov on Russian propaganda: "This brainwashing is creepy"

Moscow-born Tatort actor Vladimir Burlakov is appalled by the Russian government’s disinformation about the Ukraine war. Even friends of his family would believe the propaganda.

Berlin – For two years he has been one of the new “Tatort” faces on ARD and plays inspector Leo Holz in the Saarbrücken edition: At 35, Vladimir Burlakov is one of the young stars of the series. He probably wouldn’t have guessed that he would one day pursue an acting career in Germany when he came to the Federal Republic from Moscow with his family at the age of nine in 1996 – and at the time hardly spoke a word of German. In the meantime, the Russian-born has completely gotten rid of his accent. However, he still maintains connections in his old homeland. In an interview with the German Press Agency (dpa) , he reports on acquaintances of his family who blindly follow the Russian propaganda.

“It’s incredible how this machinery of propaganda works,” says Burlakov. Reporting in Russia is tightly controlled, independent media shut down, as well as websites and social networks.* Putin also cracks down on journalists who publish alleged “misinformation” about the Russian military. According to Burlakov, the Russian despot seems to have succeeded: “Even intelligent people, friends of my family, believe in what is supposed to be Western propaganda. When my mother shows them the pictures of the war, they say: ‘It’s all fake and not real.’ This brainwashing is really scary.” (BW24* reported)

Tatort actor Vladimir Burlakov: “I’m Russian, I’m ashamed, I’m sorry!”

Already at the beginning of the war about two weeks ago, Burlakov expressed his dismay. “I am Russian! I am ashamed! I’m sorry!” he posted on his Instagram channel.

Together with a friend, Burlakov also collects donations for food and other products on this site in order to distribute them among the refugees. “You see the suffering of the people arriving at Berlin Central Station all the time. That takes me very, very much and touches me,” says the 35-year-old.

Propaganda in Russia: Critics are silenced

Despite the threat of penalties, courageous people take to the streets in Russia every day and demonstrate against the war and disinformation. Hundreds of civil rights activists were recently arrested in Moscow.* According to media reports, Putin even had children arrested for laying flowers in front of the Ukrainian embassy.*

Examples such as that of Kremlin opponent Alexej Navalny, who is to receive 13 more years in prison*, show that it is currently impossible in Russia to openly express one’s opinion without being muzzled. *BW24 is an offer from IPPEN.MEDIA.
