The first color image of Mars taken by Curiosity

curiosity-color-g

The first color image of the Martian landscape Curiosity sent by the browser from the red planet was taken yesterday after hours of landing, the Mars Hand Lens for Imager (MAHLI) instrument. The NASA team in charge of the mission calls this day (August 6, 2012) Sun 1, which is the first Martian day of operations.

At some distance, the image shows the north wall and the edge of Gale Crater . The image is a bit blurry because the protective cover of the camera lens was damaged during the descent. Images taken without such a protective cover are expected for the next several weeks.
