A Canarian investigation reveals that Monday, October 26, has been the least productive day of 2009 on a global scale, due to the time change .
The results, from a survey of 2000 workers, also indicate that productivity will fall by 50% in all companies throughout this week . According to the researchers, perceiving that it gets dark earlier and that exposure to light is reduced affects the mood of human beings and, therefore, their concentration and performance . So much so that 8% of those surveyed admitted that they called yesterday to say they were not going to work because they were depressed on the shortest and darkest day of the year.
The phenomenon is related to Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) or " winter blues ", a type of depression linked to the seasons of the year. Most sufferers are depressed during the fall and late winter, and suffer from fatigue or loss of energy, poor concentration, indecision, and loss of interest in generally enjoyable activities, among other symptoms. To prevent this, experts recommend spending at least 30 minutes a day outdoors and doing physical exercise.
