Not only NRW and Rhineland-Palatinate are fighting with the masses of water. In Belgium, the death toll from floods has risen to at least 23. The Wallonia region is particularly hard hit.
Brussels – In Belgium, the number of deaths in connection with the severe weather continues to rise. As reported by the Belga news agency, citing the governor of the Liege province, at least 23 people were killed in Wallonia.
So far, only six of the 20 bodies found in the province of Liège have been identified. There are still people who have been sitting on roofs without eating or drinking for 36 hours. According to information from the public broadcaster RTBF, 13 people were still missing in the province of Liège at noon.
The Prime Minister of Wallonia, Elio Di Rupo, told RTBF that houses had collapsed and that flood-affected people could not be reached, Belga reported. Meanwhile the weather in Belgium has calmed down; the rain is subsiding. In addition, rail traffic was disrupted throughout Wallonia. More than 20,000 people had no electricity at times, and drinking water was contaminated in some regions. dpa
