The OAS describes the elections in Nicaragua as "illegitimate"

Voices are increasing against the electoral circus mounted by the satrap Daniel Ortega to perpetuate himself in power in Nicaragua. The Organization of American States (OAS) has indicated this Tuesday that it rejects the results of the “illegitimate” presidential elections in Nicaragua.

The Secretary General of the OAS, Luis Almagro, has also urged “the countries of the organization to respond to this clear violation of the Democratic Charter during the Assembly.”

Almagro has shared a report from the OAS General Secretariat in which it is stated that “Nicaragua held elections within the framework of a process that did not comply with any of the essential elements of democracy”, principles that are “of a mandatory and they constitute the legal framework within which the continent’s political regimes must be inserted.

“Despite the various opportunities to strengthen the electoral process and provide guarantees for fair, free and transparent elections, the Nicaraguan government chose the path of authoritarianism, thereby lying to its people and the international community regarding its will to work to build a solid electoral system, “laments the document.

The OAS also warns that “by forcing a new reelection of the president, the Government of Nicaragua has de facto ignored the criteria established by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights. This court has already established that the qualification of indefinite presidential re-election is contrary to the principles of a representative democracy ”.

“In recent years, the countries that make up the inter-American system have sought, through the different existing institutional mechanisms, that Nicaragua return to the democratic path. The Nicaraguan government, however, has completely ignored these initiatives, “lamented the agency.

To add that the Nicaraguan authorities have not taken “into account the numerous recommendations made by the 2017 OAS Electoral Accompaniment Mission, which sought to reverse the severe deficiencies in terms of equity and transparency in the Nicaraguan electoral system.”

The report of the Supreme Electoral Council, with 97.74% of the tally sheets, has awarded Ortega’s Sandinista National Liberation Front (FSLN) 75.92% of the votes, El 19 Digital collects.

The elections have been marked by arbitrary arrests of activists and journalists, among other acts of harassment, coercion and political violence. In addition, freedom of the press has also been in the government’s sights and the media have denounced restrictions and obstacles in the exercise of their work.

In Nicaragua, a leaf does not fly without the prior scrutiny of the tyrant. His face is omnipresent, like a Big Brother who sees and controls everything.
