The browser was put into service more than 25 years ago. The company reported that sites designed for this browser will run on Edge at least until 2029.
It’s retirement time for Internet Explorer, the browser that Microsoft put into service more than 25 years ago but largely abandoned in favor of its competitors Chrome (Google) and Safari (Apple).
“The future of Internet Explorer on Windows 10 is Microsoft Edge,” the computing giant said on its blog.
Edge is “faster, more secure and offers a more modern browsing experience,” acknowledged the company, in addition to being “compatible with older websites and applications.”
Many netizens posted tongue-in-cheek condolence messages on Twitter this Thursday, alluding to the jokes the browser has been subjected to for years.
“Peace to your soul Internet Explorer. I never used it, but when it’s dead we won’t be able to laugh at it anymore, ”said Arcader UwU.
“I remember when I used it to download Chrome with every Windows update,” Hrishikesh Pardeshi joked.
“This browser now looks old and outdated, but back then everyone needed it,” added TheCool_ColdMan.
Microsoft indicated that June 15, 2022 will be the fateful date when there will be no further support for Internet Explorer.
However, sites designed for this browser will run on Edge until at least 2029, Microsoft promised, especially since many organizations “have a surprisingly large number of websites” based on old technology.
Chrome, Google’s browser, has nearly 65% of the global market, according to Statscounter. Apple’s Safari, available on computers and other brand devices, ranks second with a share of almost 19% in April 2021.
Firefox, from Mozilla Foundation, and Edge, are in the third and fourth positions with 3.59% and 3.39% respectively.
It’s worth remembering that Internet Explorer has ceased to be the browser of choice for the Redmond-based company since the introduction of Microsoft Edge.
