A festival for fans of mythical creatures such as dragons and fairies attracts thousands of people to the north of Baden-Württemberg. Even if it doesn’t always stay dry, the organizers are very satisfied.
Bad Mergentheim – Whether as a fan of Vikings, fairies or knights: Thousands of visitors were enchanted at the weekend at the fantasy festival “Annotopia” in front of the residential palace in Bad Mergentheim.

Despite occasional rain, around 6,000 visitors had already come to the city in northeast Baden-Württemberg by Sunday afternoon, said a spokesman for the organizer. Given these circumstances, the festival was very well attended. After such a long time, people were thirsting to be able to take part in such a festival again, the spokesman said. Some of the visitors came in elaborate costumes.
According to the organizers, the festival is the largest of its kind in Germany and was a guest in Bad Mergentheim for the first time. Further stations are planned in Lüdinghausen (North Rhine-Westphalia) and Rotenburg an der Fulda in Hesse. Last year the festival was canceled due to the corona pandemic.
The two-day festival started on Saturday and was supposed to entertain the visitors with around 500 performers from several countries until Sunday evening and take them into a world of mythical creatures, pirates and jugglers. According to the organizers of the dragons, this included “Fangdorn”, the “essence of Saeftinghe”, the Dutch electro-folk-rock pirate band Pyrates and a magician from Scotland. The organizers had expected 8,000 visitors before the festival started. dpa
