Thousands of people demonstrated this Sunday in Warsaw to demand that the Government remain within the European Union . Polish citizens’ fear of a possible exit from their country from the EU is preceded by the tension caused by its Constitutional Court by declaring various articles of the Treaty on the European Union incompatible with its constitution.
In Warsaw, protesters have gathered in the iconic Castle Square accompanied by Polish and EU flags and chanting slogans such as “ We stay! “Or” We are Europe! “
There have also been demonstrations in cities such as Danzig, Poznan, Szczecin or Krakow, among others called by figures such as the opposition leader and former president of the European Council Donald Tusk.
The European Parliament this week demanded that the European Commission activate against Poland the new mechanism to protect the community budget and that could lead to the freezing of the funds allocated to this country, especially after the ruling of the Polish Constitutional Court that questions the primacy of EU law over the national Magna Carta.
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen , expressed on this matter her “concern about this ruling” and has warned through a written statement that she will use ” all her powers to ensure that Poland applies the EU rules.” .
According to the ruling of the Polish court, articles 1 and 4.3 allow the EU to go “beyond the limits of the powers transferred by Poland”, and with articles 2 and 19, the European courts invalidate the national Constitution. And, according to the latest Eurobarometer polls, 81% of citizens support belonging to the European Union.
President Von der Leyen assured that “our highest priority is to ensure that the rights of Polish citizens are protected and that Polish citizens enjoy the benefits that membership in the European Union gives them, as do all citizens of our Union. ». In this way it is that “our treaties are very clear”, and Von der Leyen has warned that “all judgments of the Court of Justice of the European Union are binding on the authorities of all Member States, including national courts.
The Polish Prime Minister, Jaroslaw Kaszynski , wants something truly incomprehensible as the European judicial system to allow its member states to arbitrarily reform the judicial system. At the same time, the European Union insists that this means in practice that Poland deliberately breaks the rules of the community game, which would take them out of the community club.
The demonstration of the Poles shows their fear of being relegated in the set of European states and also outside the Covid Recovery Fund, with the loss of 36,000 million euros, vital for their future. Donald Tusk , former Prime Minister and President of the European Council, was one of the main supporters of the protests and current leader of the opposition.
Tusk himself has appeared before the protesters and has accused the ruling Law and Justice party (PiS) of wanting to remove the country from the EU. “Poland’s place is in Europe,” Tusk stressed from Warsaw. “We are going to win because we are the majority,” he added.
