Traveling by car in summer 2021: restrictions and use of the mask

Summer is coming and, with the end of the State of Alarm, we can move freely around the Peninsula. There are many people who are willing to travel by car to reconnect with loved ones they have not seen for a long time or to rest for a few days on the beach or in the mountains. Now, it is important to remember that Covid-19 has not gone away. Although the health indicators are increasingly positive, we must continue to comply with a series of rules.

Traveling by car: with or without a mask?

One of the main questions is whether to travel by car with a mask on . Well, the answer is yes, as long as you travel with non-cohabitating people. There has been talk for weeks that the mandatory use of the mask in summer could be eliminated, probably in the month of July. Even if this is the case, it will be necessary to continue taking it in the car as it is a closed space.

The only cases in which you can travel without a mask are the following:

  • The driver goes alone.
  • All the occupants of the vehicle are living together. If only one of the passengers is not part of the living unit, all are obliged to wear the mask.
  • Children under 6 years old.
  • People who suffer from respiratory diseases, who have behavioral disorders or who, due to their dependency or disability, cannot remove the mask by themselves.

Not using the mask in the car is considered a minor offense, as determined by the General Public Health Law . The financial penalty amounts to 100 euros.

End to the mask abroad “very soon”

This Wednesday the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, assured that “soon we will abandon the mask” abroad. A big step towards the end of the health crisis that comes when the vaccination campaign has reached “cruising speed” in Spain. In just a few days 15 million people will have the full regimen, and in a few weeks 50% of the population will have received at least one dose.

COVID passport

And finally, traveling by car in Europe this summer will be easier from July 1, when the COVID passport goes live . It is a free physical or digital document that reflects that the holder is vaccinated, has passed the Covid-19 or has a recent negative PCR or antigen test.
