For a long time, the Twitter user community – the microblogging social network – has asked company officials to include the ability to edit tweets , a request that has fallen on deaf ears time and again.
If you make a mistake in an update on the 280 character platform you can just delete it and start over . If by mistake you have uploaded something that you did not want, there is no other solution than to delete it. Although if someone has shared or snapped it and the content was sensitive, you can get in trouble.
Twitter still bypasses the hoop with this option. But it does seem to be studying another novelty that would make it similar to other social networks. According to The Verge has echoed, the company led by Jack Dorsey has begun to test in Brazil the publication of ephemeral tweets , which they would have baptized as ‘ fleets ‘.
The fleets are simply the stories or Stories adapted to the microblogging platform . Like this format powered by Snapchat and popularized by Instagram, fleets disappear within 24 hours and are displayed on a separate timeline from tweets. In fact, their appearance would be very similar to what the original Instagram Stories had.
“Twitter is for having conversations about what matters to you. But some of you have told us that you do not feel very comfortable tweeting because the tweets are public and remain published permanently , with their retweets and their likes ”, explains Mo Aladham, a product manager at Twitter.
“We want to make it possible for you to have conversations in new ways and with less pressure or control , beyond tweets and direct messages. For this reason, starting today in Brazil we are testing a new way to start conversations from your fleeting thoughts ”, he added.
The Twitter user community does not seem too happy with the company’s decision and today the hashtag #RIPTwitter has been a trending topic.
How do you create a fleet?
To create a fleet you just have to press a button that appears in this new horizontal row at the top where these ephemeral updates are displayed. From here you can write texts of up to 280 characters, but also include photos, videos or animated GIFS. When you publish the fleets will be shown in this row where you can scroll horizontally.
The fleets of those users who you follow and who follow you will be shown first , with their most recent publication in view. What cannot be done with this new format is to like or retweet in any way.
In principle, it is possible to respond to these publications with emojis such as those that were recently incorporated into direct messages. And you can even reply with a text, which will open a new direct message with the user you are writing to.
Linkedin will also include its own stories
This same week Linkedin has also announced that it is testing the Stories within its platform and that it plans to incorporate them soon. The professional social network is testing this functionality internally and its intention is to make it available to the public in a few months.
Pete Davies, Product Manager at Linkedin’s Consumer Unit, has acknowledged that they have been considering how Stories could turn out in a professional environment since last year. The manager believes that they could add a lot of value to their platform to discuss issues inherent to jobs or comment on day-to-day aspects.
“They offer a light and entertaining way to share an update without it having to be perfect or stay linked to your profile forever,” he highlights.
