United Kingdom excludes the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands from its 'green list' of tourist destinations | Coronavirus measures

The Government of the United Kingdom, which kept tourist trips to Spain restricted, due to the high incidence of the COVID-19 pandemic, has updated its travel recommendations for Spain this Friday where it excludes the Balearic and Canary Islands from the list of safe destinations – ‘ green list’-.

As reported by the BBC, all of Spain, islands included , remain on the amber list of the Covid traffic light. This means that British tourists, who are not required to provide any proof upon arrival, will have to quarantine for ten days and undergo two PCRs on their return, measures that make a vigorous resumption of tourist flows unfeasible.

Regarding the Canary Islands there were contradictory news. Although the British Foreign website has not updated the information and maintains these islands in amber, sources from the Foreign Office and the BBC assure that both archipelagos, the Balearic and Canary Islands, are excluded from the green list . They add, however, that both are analyzed outside the peninsula, because they understand that they have better data.

The United Kingdom has decided to leave all of Spain off the green list due to the incidence of coronavirus, with 120 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 14 days. Therefore, it has not taken into account the high rate of vaccination of the population or the notable improvement in the epidemiological situation experienced in recent weeks.

The UK authorities have also included in their latest update the end of border controls in Portugal, lifted last weekend.

On the other hand, from the Ministry of Tourism directed by Reyes Maroto, they assure that they are working to get the British authorities to understand that the epidemiological situation is decreasing its incidence throughout the country due to the high vaccination of recent weeks and that, for In this same sense, the autonomous communities of the Balearic Islands and the Canary Islands are safe destinations.

The United Kingdom accumulates more than 4.4 million cases of coronavirus and on Wednesday the Ministry of Health reported an additional 1,649 positives. At least 127,000 people have died in British territory as victims of COVID-19.
