The Venice Carnival is world famous. This year the festival is taking place under special conditions. There is also something to see at home for those who are interested.
Venice – culture under Corona: The carnival in the northern Italian lagoon city of Venice, which is world-famous for its costumes and masks, is hybrid this year. The first events surrounding the traditional festival, which runs until March 1st, began on Saturday.
“Remember the future” is the motto of this carnival, which is being celebrated for the third time under Corona conditions. The organizers equalized the festival and, according to their own statements, organized a series of pandemic-friendly events on the islands of the lagoon, the mainland and in the old town.
Online events for audiences worldwide
The 2G rule applies to concerts, performances in theaters or exhibitions: Anyone who wants to be there on site needs the corona vaccination certificate or proof of recovery. This year, however, the carnival also wants to be accessible to its international audience. Interested parties can follow some events in the live stream online.
Due to the corona, however, the organizers canceled some traditional events in order to avoid crowds. This also includes the “Flight of the Angels”, in which a woman in a magnificent costume hovers on a wire above the famous St. Mark’s Square. From Sunday, the police can also divert pedestrians in the historic center or temporarily block roads if there are too many people in one place.

When the weather was sunny on Saturday afternoon, numerous people were already bustling about in the tourist-popular St. Mark’s Square – a kind of indicator of how busy the city could be. The carnival with its masked balls, gondola parades and fireworks is one of the most important festivals in Venice. A completely different picture in 2021: At that time it was purely digital. At the time, strict corona rules applied in Italy with nightly curfews and limited opening hours for bars and restaurants. dpa
